Reese's No Secrets Tuesday

I woke up crabby this morning. I was impatient when Zach woke me up, snapped at Tim for asking me to scoot over on the stairs so he could pass, and participated in a ridiculous argument with him unrelated to my place on the stairs. After about an hour of this I thought What is wrong with me?! Then I did the math: 5 days until my period is expected. Nasty PMS is paying an especially cruel visit this time around.

Whatever man said PMS is only in a woman's head is obviously... a man. I didn't even realize it was that time of the month and I was feeling it. Some months I escape it, other months I have just a hint, and some months I feel fairly certain that my family wants to relocate me to Alaska.

I went to one of my favorite websites, Thesausus.com. Here is the list of synonyms for "grumpy":

  • bad-tempered
  • cantankerous
  • crabbed
  • cranky
  • cross
  • disagreeable
  • fretful
  • grouchy
  • irascible
  • irritable
  • nasty
  • peevish
  • petulant
  • querulous
  • snappish
  • snappy
  • surly
  • testy
  • ugly
  • waspish
  • out of sorts

I figure I've been all of these- possible more than one at a time- at least once today.

On days like these, Oswald Chambers' spirit follows me around and whispers:

There are certain things in life that we need not pray about— moods, for instance. We will never get rid of moodiness by praying, but we will by kicking it out of our lives. Moods nearly always are rooted in some physical circumstance, not in our true inner self. It is a continual struggle not to listen to the moods which arise as a result of our physical condition, but we must never submit to them for a second. We have to pick ourselves up by the back of the neck and shake ourselves; then we will find that we can do what we believed we were unable to do. The problem that most of us are cursed with is simply that we won’t.

Apparently PMS isn't an excuse for bad behavior. Too bad 'cause I could use that excuse for every bit of bad behavior I feel like putting on display (I told my friend J today that I just feel like throwing shoes at everyone. For some reason she decided not to come over with her kids......)

Anyone else struggle with PMS? Any suggestions for miraculous cures? I'm open to just anything besides eating shrimp and drinking Pepsi.

(Anyone else see all the different sizes of the letters in my posts??!! No matter what I try, it won't be fixed. Geez Louise. What a day...)

  1. Well, fortunately I only suffer 1 day before, not 5 days before! I actually anticipate it and mark the calendar. It seems to help if I know it is coming and can reign in those urges to throw shoes. (love that one!) Actually, I don't get mean, I just get teary. I read somewhere that you can take doses of magnesium, calcium and evening primrose oil a few days before. Not sure why it works, but it seems to help. You could probably google "pms and natural remedies" and find lots of ideas. Hey...I wonder if sunshine works on PMS?!

  2. I thought it was just me with the whole stange letter sizes the other night. Must have been a blogger glitch. I kept having to toggle between edit and compose to fix the problem.

  3. My suggestion. . .throw the shoes (as long as they aren't aimed at anyone). Just kidding. I think anticipating it as Betsy says helps. I'm not so sure what you can take, but maybe just refusing to allow it to have control.

  4. Boy, that Chambers was a smart guy (and convicting), but I love to read his words.

I suffer for several days before, and it's usually not pretty. I've never done anything for it other than suffer through it, along with my family. Once I did or said something bad and then apologized to Robert with the PMS reason, to which he said, "At least I know that's why." Apparently to him it is an excuse. But it makes me realize my bad behavior isn't subject just to those few days. Maybe it just intensifies. Either way, I need to take Chambers words to heart. I'm going to print out what you blogged, just as soon as I can get a cartridge for my printer!

Sorry I wasn't any help, but there are more of us out there.

  5. Oh, by the way, I chose to leave out the gross part of the crawfish. They say when you "suck the head" it is like a salty juice. I guess that's what the boiling does to the brains. Gross, huh? I have to disagree with you though on the comparison with shrimp, because anything that you can suck something out of that looks like a bug cannot possible be related to the shrimp. But you can stick to your story.

Nothing like grossing you out while you're having PMS...

  6. Reese, I feel your pain, honey (as if you couldn't tell from recent posts on my blog!)! It seems my PMSing has gotten worse since kids...not sure if it's a physical/hormonal change, or simply the sleep-deprivation and added stress on top of it all.

Anyway, I think Chambers' quote is a good place to start. Also, anticipating it sounds like a great idea, too...I might have to try that! I don't know that I'm the one to offer any additional advice since I usually want to just crawl in a hole somewhere until it all passes! :) But if all else fails, I have found that chocolate does often help! ;)
