I'm Much Too Young To Have a Son This Old

Sean right before last week's homecoming dance

I'm not prepared for Sean to grow up. He started high school this fall and with that his hormones seem to have jumped into hyper mode. Suddenly he is determined to up his coolness factor; he is claiming right now that all it will take is a hoodie... but I know better! He loves hanging out with upper classmen from his Junior ROTC class. He goes off campus once a week to eat with friends at Burger King. He's growing up and I'm not ready.

I realized I wasn't ready last Saturday when I heard that one of his good friends had asked a girl out and quickly moved to holding hands and kissing within hours. My chest got tight and my breathing laborious. I began to sweat and my hands shook. If C could do that, then surely my son could too. (Despite my spending the past 14 1/2 years warning him not too!)

Suddenly I understand my mother-in-law like never before. Tim was her oldest, her only son, and I hooked up with him when he was 18. I can't imagine how she coped!

I don't know what I'll do the first time I see Sean holding a girl's hand. I might not live beyond seeing him kiss someone. I really hope he holds off on the kissing-- until he's 30 or 35. I might be able to handle that. Maybe.

  4. Lora,

That is a brilliant idea. I should have started years ago. Maybe I'll start praying like a house on fire for Christ's quick return and deliverance from the evils of adolescence.
