Random Memory

This totally random memory came back to me this morning and I thought I’d share to give you a little insight into the history of Heather and Reese as friends.

It was October, 1994, possibly on my birthday. Dan and Heather were over and while Dan and Tim were out of the room Heather confided that she was “late.” At the time Sean was a baby and I was thrilled at the prospect of Heather expecting her first baby, so I strongly urged her to buy a home test and find out what was going on. She said she had some birthday money to spend and might use it for a test. (Keep in mind we were all young and broke, so money just waiting to be spent was a rare thing.)

It may have been that same night, she called me on the phone and said she had bought a test and was going to take it. I waited impatiently until the phone rang again.

“I DID IT BUT CAN’T TELL IF IT’S POSITIVE OR NOT!!!” Heather yelped into the phone.

“Two lines mean it’s positive.” I told her. “Are there two lines?”

“I can’t tell. Maybe.” She answered. “I’m coming over. You can look at it and tell me what you think.”

The mile drive from her house to mine took only a few minutes, and she was walking through the door, her face flushed with anticipation and excitement. She thrust the test at me.

One look and I knew. “Heather! You’re pregnant!”

“Really? How can you tell?” She looked at the test again. “Oh. It didn’t look like that before!”

In her excitement she had read the test too soon, which was fine with me, because that meant I got to tell her she was pregnant!

Months later Dan woke me from a deep sleep with a phone call saying, “It’s a girl!” Now in a few weeks that baby girl will be turning 13! I’m so blessed to have had Heather, Dan and her family in our lives for so long. And happy birthday to Amanda!
